Today
Now operated by the sixth generation of the Bishop’s, our Guilford, CT property cares for over 300 acres of agricultural land while embracing innovative sustainability practices that honor both tradition and the future of farming.
At Bishop’s, we believe great food starts with healthy soil, balanced ecosystems, and mindful growing practices. Every choice we make, from the crops we plant to how we protect them, is guided by respect for the land and care for our community.

Bishop's practices Integrated Pest Management, or 'IPM' for short. This means that we use a variety of targeted tools and carefully monitor our fields daily, so that every action we take has purpose. We focus on prevention and balance, working with nature rather than against it. When challenges arise, we use strategic, low-impact methods and encourage beneficial insects and plant diversity to keep our ecosystems strong and thriving!

Instead of heavy, broad treatments, we carefully consider our options, often relying on: crop rotation, natural pest barriers, selective plantings that help reduce the need for intervention. Cover crops, soil-building grasses, and beneficial borders all play a role in keeping our land productive and resilient year after year.

A secret to sustaining a 6 generation farm is never being afraid to evolve when new information presents itself. We are committed to learning and implementing the latest eco-conscious, regenerative farming practices - this minimizes our footprint and prioritizes long-term sustainability. As staple in the community for over 150 years, you can trust that nothing is more important to us than growing food that you can feel good about feeding your family.

Over the past few decades, our solar investment is one of the key ways we’re growing a more sustainable future. Our two solar arrays, totaling 477 kW DC, now generate roughly 80% of the electricity that powers our daily work, from the fields to the Farm Market. Built on non-arable land and existing rooftops, these systems protect valuable farmland while reducing our environmental footprint.
At Bishop’s Orchards, we believe great food starts with healthy soil, balanced ecosystems, and mindful growing practices. Every choice we make, from the crops we plant to how we protect them, is guided by respect for the land and care for our community.

A Science First Approach
Instead of heavy, broad treatments, we carefully consider our options, often relying on crop rotation, natural pest barriers, and selective plantings that help reduce the need for intervention. Cover crops, soil-building grasses, and beneficial borders all play a role in keeping our land productive and resilient year after year.
Our fields and orchards are carefully monitored so that every action we take has purpose but we are not an organic farm. We focus on prevention and balance. We work with nature rather than against it. When challenges arise, we use targeted, low-impact methods - be they synthetic or organic - and encourage beneficial insects and plant diversity to keep our treasured local ecosystems strong and thriving.
We grow many crops for our Pick Your Own and Farm Market offerings such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, peaches, apples & pears. We also grow a wide variety of other fruits & vegetables such as asparagus, tomatoes, peppers, squash, ground cherries, potted herbs, and decorative flowers. Each year we experiment with new crops from baby bok choy to shisito peppers.
We are proud to care for 313 acres of Connecticut farmland in Guilford and Northford, CT.
